PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
We have had about $2,000 in contributions in the names of Layton Merritt
and Burt Klein. If we asked these two what to do with the money, Layton would
say, Pay off the mortgage and Burt would say I dont care. We may include these contributions in with
the other memorial contributions for the party and game. If anyone has any suggestions, please let
Elaine Prager or me know. While these
two gentlemen were special, we are aware of setting precedents. Nancy Gates has
acknowledged the gifts to the widows.
Suzanne Cliffe has resigned as I/N coordinator. Many thanks to Suzanne for her past efforts
running the Intermediate /Novice tournaments and Easybridge. She did a great
job. Doug De Montluzin has agreed to
take over the I/N program. We are
excited to have him handling this and appreciate his help.
If anyone is interested in taking the director course and becoming a
director, we have the materials available. We can always use another director.
We have been lucky as most clubs in the area are short of directors and some
have had to cancel games because of it
The May tournament went well. Juanita Heidingsfelder and Ellie Brammell
did a super job, as did Anne Plauche as Partnership Chair. The many people who
contributed their time, money, and efforts made the tournament possible. I
dont want to name anyone, for fear of forgetting someone, but since this is
New Orleans, I might mention the food was great. I noticed it all sold well.
Finally, one couple in the bridge bulletin said the system they play is FAAT, which is Fun At All Times. Some of our members play that system already. Those of you who havent tried it, give it a shot.

DIRECTOR!
With Zero Tolerance now a
reality in the club and a growing fact at tournaments, take a moment to
consider the role of our directors. I
believe that we are fortunate to have the variety of directors that we
have. Their approaches to the game give
us a spectrum of experience that better prepares us for the tournament world.
Further we all should take
time to appreciate what being a good
director requires. One must have:
1 Patience and good humor
(hopefully) to defuse a tense situation when they are called to a table.
2. Thick skin to shed the
innuendo that they dont know what theyre doing (especially when they give a
ruling that someone doesnt like).
3. Near-encyclopedic know-ledge
of the rules to know where to look in the Laws to make a good ruling..
4. Above average computer skills to make a sometimes balky ACBL Score
program do its job.
5. Host skills to make newcomers feel welcome and appreciated.
6. And the list goes on
..
And now with Zero Tolerance in force we can add another skill to their
job description: Wisdom. The wisdom to know when to assess a penalty
to reform an offender, when to issue a warning, etc.
Directors take a lot of
abuse, and they keep coming back. However, without them, we would have a much
less enjoyable game.
WISDOM AT THE BRIDGE TABLE
Squelch your FIRST question or
critical comment! Dont discuss play or
bidding with your partner until the end of the game. Best: Wait until the next
day.
If pard is playing like Ron Anderson, DONT congratulate him at the
table. (see above) Later express awe.
